Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has claimed that his former teammate Fernando Torres felt that the club had betrayed him before his £50m switch to Chelsea.
The Spanish forward was an instant hit at Anfield following a 2007 move from Atletico Madrid.
However, things turned sour during the summer of 2010 which eventually led to Torres leaving the club.
The striker's compatriot has now lifted the lid on the reasoning behind his departure.
"As much as it hurt the supporters to see [Torres] go, I can understand his reasons for leaving," Reina wrote in his autobiography. When Fernando started to feel that Liverpool were never going to be competitive again, it quickly became inevitable that he would accept the offer from Chelsea.
"I did know he was really angry because he felt he had been betrayed by Liverpool before he left. There had been plenty of lies, plenty of promises which had not been kept.
"It became clear the Liverpool we were at was not the Liverpool either of us had joined."
The Reds and Chelsea meet this Sunday afternoon at Stamford Bridge.
