Tottenham Hotspur attacker Richarlison has been handed a one-game ban and fined £25,000 by the FA following a flare-throwing incident against Chelsea last season.

The 25-year-old recently completed a £60m move to Antonio Conte's side from Everton after helping the Toffees stave off relegation to the Championship in the 2021-22 campaign.

Richarlison scored 10 goals and set up five more in 30 Premier League appearances last term, and one of his strikes saw the Toffees claim a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park in May.

The result left Everton's fate in their own hands with five games left to play, and a blue flare was thrown onto the Goodison Park pitch from the home crowd during the contest with Thomas Tuchel's side.

Richarlison responded by picking up the flare and launching the missile back into the crowd, prompting the FA to open an investigation into the incident.

Richarlison was charged by the FA for throwing the banned pyrotechnic at the start of June, with the statement reading: "Richarlison de Andrade has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 following Everton FC's Premier League fixture against Chelsea FC on Sunday 1 May 2022.

"It is alleged the forward's conduct in the 46th minute of the fixture was improper. He has until Wednesday 8 June 2022 to provide a response."

Richarlison's former club Everton claimed that the ex-Watford man did not have malicious intentions, adding: "We will look into the matter. As far as we are concerned, Richarlison was attempting to throw it out of the ground."

Now, the FA have announced that the attacker has been sanctioned, saying in a statement: "An independent Regulatory Commission has suspended Richarlison de Andrade for one match and fined him £25,000 following a breach of FA Rule E3 that took place during a Premier League game on Sunday 1 May 2022.

"The Tottenham Hotspur FC forward admitted that his conduct while playing for Everton FC during the 46th minute of this game against Chelsea FC was improper, and his sanction was imposed during a subsequent hearing."

As a result, Richarlison will not be available for Spurs' first game of the Premier League season against Southampton on August 6 and will instead make his debut against Chelsea the following week.

Richarlison is due to link up with Tottenham for their pre-season trip to South Korea, which will see Conte's side take on a K-League XI and Sevilla in the Coupang Play Series on July 13 and 16 respectively.

Spurs will then take on Rangers in a friendly on July 23 before a reunion with Jose Mourinho for an I-Tech Cup showdown in Israel seven days later.

During his four years at Everton, Richarlison amassed 53 goals and 14 assists in 152 appearances for the Toffees in all competitions, registering at least 10 direct contributions in each Premier League season.

The attacker has signed a five-year deal with the Lilywhites until the summer of 2027 and followed Yves Bissouma, Fraser Forster and Ivan Perisic to the club ahead of Spurs' return to the Champions League. body check tags ::
