Goals from Timo Werner and Mason Mount have earned Chelsea a 2-1 victory over Club America in their first pre-season friendly of the summer.

During their week of preparation in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, much of the attention has been on the signings of Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Neither of the new arrivals featured at the Allegiant Stadium on Saturday night as they continue to work under their own training programmes, giving Thomas Tuchel the opportunity to take a look at his players from last season and the returning loanees.

Tuchel named entirely different starting lineups for each half, the opening period seeing Ben Chilwell and Callum Hudson-Odoi make their first starts since November and March after knee and Achilles injuries respectively.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, Kenedy and Ross Barkley were also named in a side which had an unfamiliar look to it, but the Premier League giants had their moments with Hakim Ziyech, Kenedy, Kai Havertz and Thiago Silva all going close to getting their names on the scoresheet.

Ahead of the restart, Marcus Bettinelli, Ethan Ampadu and Michy Batshuayi were all introduced into the game, but it was Werner who broke the deadlock in the 55th minute.

The German forward's initial shot after meeting Reece James's cutback was saved, but he made no mistake at the second attempt as he converted from close range.

Five minutes later, however, there was calamity in the Chelsea backline as James netted an own goal which he will not want to remember in the long term.

Attempting to pass the ball back to Bettinelli, the right wing-back aimed too far to the goalkeeper's left and towards the far corner, catching his teammate out with the ball rolling into the net from the corner of the penalty area.

Despite the game only being a friendly, Tuchel would have still wanted to win the contest, its competitiveness being highlighted by three yellow cards being handed out in the first half.

The Blues boss got his wish with eight minutes remaining as Mount's quick feet on the edge of the area allowed him to curl a fine effort into the far corner from the edge of the box.

Emerson Palmieri - another returning loan player - went close during the final stages, but Chelsea ultimately settled for success against a team who are currently sitting in sixth position in Mexico's top flight.

The West Londoners are next in action on Wednesday evening when they take on MLS side Charlotte FC. body check tags ::
