Chelsea 'still not considering sacking Graham Potter'

Chelsea continue to back head coach Graham Potter despite Saturday's home loss to Aston Villa, according to a report.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter reportedly still has the full backing of the club despite Saturday's home defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League.

The 2-0 loss at Stamford Bridge saw the Blues drop into 11th position in the table, 11 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur on the same number of matches (28).

Potter has led Chelsea into the quarter-finals of the Champions League, with the capital outfit preparing to take on holders Real Madrid, with the first leg set to take place at Bernabeu on April 12.

However, the 47-year-old has now lost 11 of his 31 matches since being appointed as head coach of the London giants in early September.

There were boos from sections of the Chelsea supporters on Saturday, with Villa securing all three points courtesy of goals from Ollie Watkins and John McGinn.

Big-money recruit Mykhaylo Mudryk again found it difficult to impress, with the Ukraine international passing up a couple of excellent chances before being withdrawn.

However, according to the Daily Mail, despite being heavily disappointed by the loss on Saturday, Chelsea's owners still have faith in Potter.

The report claims that there is 'an undoubted desire' among senior officials at Stamford Bridge to give Potter the chance to make his mark following his arrival from Brighton & Hove Albion.

However, the availability of Julian Nagelsmann, who was recently sacked by Bayern Munich, has led to fresh speculation that a change in the dug-out could be made.

"In both boxes we were second best," Potter told reporters after the loss to Villa. "The first goal for them is disappointing and we need to do better. There were a lot of good things in the game, a lot of attacking play, entries and a lot of shots. If you look at the stats, it was positive.

"The boys gave everything in the game. Their intentions were there, they showed personality and tried. Ultimately, you need to defend better than we did. I am responsible for that, and we will look at it and do better.

"We started well in the second half, but then one action sees the ball back up our end and then it is a great strike from McGinn. Ultimately, the most important stat is the defeat. We have to accept it and work hard to put things right."

Chelsea will now be bidding to return to winning ways when they welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night; the Blues will then head to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the league next weekend ahead of their trip to Real Madrid in the Champions League.
