Chelsea are reportedly giving consideration to making an approach for Atalanta BC defender Joakim Maehle.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged on a number of occasions that he wants to add at least one more central-back to his squad as soon as possible.
That has led to the Blues being strongly linked with Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana after missing out on Jules Kounde, who has joined Barcelona.
However, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso continuing to be linked with a transfer away from Stamford Bridge, thought is being given to alternatives in the wing-back areas.
According to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea have identified Maehle as a potential option if either of the Spaniards return to their homeland with Barcelona.
The 25-year-old has spent the last 18 months representing the Italian outfit, making a total of 28 starts and 19 substitute appearances in Serie A.
During that period, the Denmark international has contributed just one goal and three assists, but his stock has only been enhanced during his time in Italy.
With three years remaining on his contract, Atalanta do not necessarily need to feel in any rush to cash in on one of their valuable squad members.
Nevertheless, Maehle is said to be available for approximately £12.8m, a valuation which will inevitably lead to interest from more clubs than just Chelsea.
Although Maehle prefers to operate at right-back or right wing-back, he is also capable of deputising in the same areas on the opposite flank.
With Reece James and Ben Chilwell regarded as first choice in each role, Maehle would only be regarded as backup should he make the switch to West London.
Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries, who could be available for a fee in the region of £34m.
However, Manchester United are said to be ready to rival their Premier League rivals in their race to sign the Netherlands international. body check tags ::
