RB Leipzig have ended speculation regarding the future of Josko Gvardiol by announcing a new contract for the defender.
Throughout the summer transfer window, Chelsea have been heavily linked with the Croatia international at a time when they have required a new left-sided centre-back.
The 20-year-old has been regarded as the perfect fit by Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel, who has had more input over transfers since the takeover led by Todd Boehly.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the Premier League giants were prepared to pay £77m and allow Gvardiol to remain at the Bundesliga outfit for 2022-23.
However, RB Leipzig chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff responded to those claims by stating that he expects one of the club's most prized assets to spend at least two years at the Red Bull Arena.
While that may have been perceived to be an effort to increase any future offer from Chelsea or another club, Leipzig had seemingly already been negotiating a new contract with the youngster.
Gvardiol is now tied to the German outfit until the end of the 2026-27, effectively ending any interest from Chelsea for the foreseeable future.
Since signing for Leipzig 14 months ago, Gvardiol has made a total of 42 starts and nine substitute appearances in all competitions.
During the last campaign, he helped Leipzig progress through to the Europa League semi-finals before they were defeated by Rangers. body check tags ::
