Chelsea defender Alex has been holding discussion with Paris Saint-Germain over a move to the French capital.
The Brazilian international appeared to be close to completing a switch to Queens Park Rangers last week.
However, discussions between the two parties are believed to have broken down and PSG have moved to take advantage of the uncertainty.
"Thiago Motta and Alex? For both, there is a possibility. But for now, nothing is done," PSG's general manager Leonardo told L'Equipe.
Alex, 29, joined Chelsea in 2004.
