Today's League One clash between Crawley Town and Carlisle United has been postponed.
Referee Rob Lewis decided to call the game off because of concerns about an area of the pitch near one of the penalty areas.
Lewis is quoted by Crawley's official website as saying: "95% of the pitch is firm and I must pay tribute to the ground staff, staff and supporters of Crawley, some of whom have been in since 5.30am to try and get the game on.
"There is a sanded area in front of the dugouts but that was certainly playable. My sole concern was an area of the penalty area where you go from firm conditions underfoot to very soft.
"I appreciate a lot of hard work has gone to try and get the game played but my first priority has to be the safety of the players."
Crawley CEO Michael Dunford released a video on his club's official website telling fans that he will be talking to Carlisle United on Monday to discuss compensation for the travelling fans.
