Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has revealed that captain Matt Tootle is closing in on a return to fitness.
The 24-year-old has been out of action since October with persistent ankle problems.
However, the defender is expected to be back training with the first team in the near future.
"Toots has a real chance of playing again this season," Davis is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News. "He's almost ready to rejoin training, then a few Under-21 games. I still might bring one or two in before the loan deadline depending on injuries and results in these next few games."
Crewe, who are currently seven points above the relegation zone in the League One table, continue their campaign on Saturday when they travel to Preston North End.
