Alan Pardew: 'We need to work on set pieces'

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew vows to work on his side's defending of set pieces after they conceded from two corners during their 4-2 defeat to Liverpool.

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew has vowed to work on set pieces after his side conceded from two corners during their 4-2 defeat to Liverpool this evening.

Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip both headed home having lost their markers as Jurgen Klopp's side continued their free-scoring start to the season to keep pace with Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the table.

Pardew acknowledged that his side did not start the match well, but believes that they could have got something out of the game had some refereeing decisions gone the other way.

"The first half was difficult on the sideline. We talked about putting them under pressure but in the first period we did not start well," he told BBC Sport.

"We worked hard and defended well but we should have put more pressure on Liverpool. But they are a good team. Two set plays though, that is not us. We have to tighten up on that area. Our centre-backs are good but they got done today. It is something we have to work on.

"In the second half, the game hinged on key moments. There were some penalty decisions which I thought were tight. We had a tight one last season with the same referee."

Pardew also questioned the appointment of referee Andre Marriner for the match after he awarded Liverpool a late match-winning penalty in the corresponding fixture last term.
