Crystal Palace have failed in their efforts to re-sign former striker Andy Johnson from Queens Park Rangers before the close of the transfer window.
Eagles boss Ian Holloway has already recruited both Marouane Chamakh and Dwight Gayle this summer, but was still desperate to add some more firepower to the newly-promoted club's squad.
They had been hoping to loan Nicklas Bendtner from Arsenal, but the Gunners opted to keep the Dane on their books after being rebuffed in their attempts to sign Chelsea's Demba Ba as a replacement.
Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted that they had lodged a bid Johnson, who scored 21 goals the last time the Selhurst Park outfit were in the Premier League.
However, QPR boss Harry Redknapp was unwilling to allow Johnson to leave Loftus Road, forcing Palace and Holloway to turn to Stoke City frontman Cameron Jerome.
