Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand has criticised the UEFA protocols which allow a match to be postponed for 48 hours due to coronavirus but not when his player Christian Eriksen had a cardiac arrest on the pitch.

Eriksen, who took to Instagram on Tuesday to insist he was "fine, under the circumstances", collapsed shortly before half-time in Denmark's Euro 2020 opener against Finland on Saturday and had to be resuscitated before being taken to hospital.

The match was suspended for about 90 minutes before Denmark were then given the choice to continue playing the game or to return the following day to complete it.

UEFA on Monday defended its handling of the incident, saying in a statement: "UEFA is sure it treated the matter with utmost respect for the sensitive situation and for the players.

"It was decided to restart the match only after the two teams requested to finish the game on the same evening.

"The players' need for 48 hours' rest between matches eliminated other options."

Harry Kane was on his way to speak to the media when former Tottenham team-mate Eriksen collapsed.

England cancelled the pre-Croatia press conference in light of the situation in Copenhagen, with the Three Lions skipper saying their partners have spoken.

"I texted him but haven't got a response yet obviously," Kane told ITV. "He is going under some tests.

"My wife managed to speak to his wife and she said obviously they are doing OK, they are going through the checks.

"It was a scary time for him and his family as well. It was dreadful to watch.

"Like I said at the weekend, I am wishing him all the best and his family all the best and I am hoping he makes a speedy recovery."

Asked if the incident brings perspective, Kane said: "Sometimes we take things for granted and we take football for granted and life for granted.

"That was a reminder that things can be taken away so quickly.

"Like we said, it was a dreadful thing to watch and experience.

"For us it is just about enjoying this experience, enjoying this tournament and going out there with no fear.

"We want to win, we are all winners, we are passionate to win – just express yourself and enjoy the occasion because they don't come around too often."
