Sports Mole rounds up a busy night of Football League Trophy action as Wimbledon score late to beat rivals MK Dons.

AFC Wimbledon scored a late winner to clinch a dramatic 3-2 victory over rivals MK Dons in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy this evening.

The hosts got off to a perfect start when Daniel Powell gave them the lead after just two minutes, while Benik Afobe restored his side's advantage five minutes before the break following Adebayo Azeez's equaliser.

However, the League Two side fought back in the second half, with Sean Rigg levelling the scores before Adebayo Akinfenwa netted the winner 10 minutes from time.

Plymouth Argyle pulled off the shock of the round, edging past high-flying League One side Swindon Town at Home Park courtesy of first-half goals from Lewis Alessandra (2) and Deane Smalley.

Swindon almost pulled off an incredible comeback in the second half, but Argyle held out in the dying stages to eventually clinch a 3-2 win.

The highest scoring encounter of the evening was between Colchester United and Gillingham as both sides came from behind in a topsy-turvy 90 minutes that finished 3-3. That sent the game to penalties, and it was Gillingham who emerged victorious 4-2 in the shootout.

In the early kickoff, struggling Hartlepool United gave Sheffield United a scare at Victoria Park, but a late strike from Jamal Campbell-Ryce ensured that the League One side progressed to the third round.

Doncaster Rovers avoided an upset against Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium, with first-half goals from Harry Forrester and Nathan Tyson, the latter of whom converted from the spot, setting them on their way to a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Leyton Orient ended a three-match losing streak away to Dagenham & Redbridge courtesy of a brace from Jay Simpson, while Coventry City also put an end to their own poor spell of form with a comfortable victory over Exeter City.

Barnsley recovered from two goals down to force penalties against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park, but the hosts held their nerve in the shootout to claim a 4-2 win.

Tranmere Rovers and Carlisle United also needed spot kicks to separate them at Prenton Park, and once again it was the home side who emerged victorious with a 5-4 shootout victory.

Preston North End made it four wins on the bounce in all competitions with a 3-2 victory over Port Vale at Deepdale, although they were forced to withstand some heavy late pressure following a Tom Pope brace.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Walsall, Crawley Town, Notts County, Bury and Northampton Town on a busy night of action that saw 51 goals overall.
