Gerard Houllier believes that Group D favourites England and France must both improve if they are to qualify for the quarter-finals at Euro 2012.
The sides played out a 1-1 draw in Donetsk on Monday night and now face less prestigious opposition in the shape of Sweden and co-hosts Ukraine.
However, former Liverpool and Aston Villa boss Houllier has warned the Three Lions and Les Bleus that they will have to increase the level of their performances in order to progress beyond the group stage.
"Both sides will have to improve to qualify," he told talkSPORT. "It's a difficult group – more difficult than it looks.
"England aren't playing with all their assets at the moment. Some of their players are suspended or injured.
"Roy has done a fantastic job. He's had to be parachuted in as national coach, now he needs some good results."
England face Sweden, who they have never beaten in a competitive match, in Kiev on Friday.
