Chairman of the Football Association David Bernstein thanks Fabio Capello for his 'professionalism' while in charge of England.

Chairman of the Football Association David Bernstein has thanked Fabio Capello for his 'professionalism' throughout his England tenure.

Bernstein also admitted that Capello "was not happy" with the fact that John Terry was stripped of the England captaincy.

"I would like to publicly thank Fabio Capello for all that he has done. He has provided us with two qualifications into major tournaments, the World Cup and Euro 2012," Bernstein told reporters.

"We all believed that the John Terry case would be dealt with in March or April, when it was postponed we were taken by surprise ... the board made a very quick and important, unanimous decision.

"I informed Fabio on Thursday evening - that communication with Fabio was made before the announcement on Friday morning. Fabio was not happy but he accepted the board's authority on the matter. On Sunday Fabio conducted an interview with an Italian broadcaster that caused conjecture and huge public debate.

"I want to emphasise that the meetings were professional and amicable and all matters were concluded within four hours."

When asked as to whether Capello would have been sacked if the Italian did not step down as manager, Bernstein replied: "It didn't arise."

Stuart Pearce will take charge of England's upcoming match with Holland.
