Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater is reportedly still hopeful of earning a World Cup spot despite declining an England call-up for this month's friendlies.
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate looked to the Blues man after Dele Alli, Jordan Henderson, Harry Winks and Fabian Delph all dropped out through injury.
Drinkwater denied the opportunity, however, complaining of a calf problem that has restricted him to playing just 103 minutes of football for the Premier League champions.
The Evening Standard reports that the 27-year-old's decision was not based on a lack of desire and that Drinkwater is still determined to earn a spot in Southgate's setup.
England drew 0-0 with Germany at Wembley on Friday and host Brazil on Tuesday in the second friendly of the international break.
Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who is on loan at Crystal Palace, impressed in his Three Lions debut against the world champions while fellow youngster Dominic Solanke has been called up.
