Old rivals England and Germany will meet at Wembley tomorrow evening as part of the Football Association's 150th anniversary celebrations.
The two nations have faced each other on 28 previous occasions, many of which have thrown up some memorable encounters.
With that in mind, below, Sports Mole has picked out five of the best matches between the sides.
Germany 3-6 England, 1938
England may have hit six goals, but this match is best remembered for what happened before the action got underway. Hermann Goring and Joseph Goebbels were in the Berlin crowd, whom the visiting players saluted. For the record, Sheffield Wednesday's Jackie Robinson scored twice, while further goals from Cliff Bastin, Frank Broome, Stanley Matthews and Leonard Goulden eased the away side to victory. Meanwhile, Rudolf Gellesch, Josef Gauchel and Hans Pesser found the net for the hosts.
England 4-2 West Germany, 1966
The finest hour as far as English football is concerned, still! It would also be the best moment of Geoff Hurst's career. The West Ham United centre-forward probably would not have even been playing had Jimmy Greaves not picked up an injury earlier in the tournament, but Hurst took full advantage and rewarded the faith shown in him by scoring a hat-trick as England lifted the World Cup for the first time thanks to a 4-2 success after extra time. Martin Peters also scored for England at Wembley, wtih Helmut Haller and Wolfgang Weber netting for the defeated Germans.
West Germany 3-2 England, 1970
The chance to gain revenge was presented to Germany four years later in Mexico and they duly grabbed it. It appeared that the holders were going to cruise into the next round when Alan Mullery and Peters put them 2-0 up. From that point, though, it would be all about England goalkeeper Peter Bonetti, who was deputising for an ill Gordon Banks. He received heavy criticism as goals from Franz Beckenbauer and Uwe Seeler forced extra time, in which Gerd Muller eventually scored the winning goal.
England 1-1 West Germany (3-4 pens), 1990
More World Cup heartbreak for England inflicted by the Germans, this time at Italia '90. Defender Andreas Brehme gave Beckenbauer's side the lead in the 59th minute when his free kick deflected off Paul Parker and over a helpless Peter Shilton. However, with time running out, Gary Lineker continued his fine form by firing in from 10 yards out to send the game into extra time. No further goals were scored and so England's hate affair with penalties would begin. Stuart Pearce saw his effort saved by Bodo Illgner, while Chris Waddle sent his high into the stands at the Stadio Delle Alpi.
England 1-1 Germany (5-6 pens), 1996
Six years later at the European Championships it was an identical scoreline and the same outcome, although it could have been very different. Alan Shearer gave England an early lead, but that was soon cancelled out by Stefan Kuntz. It was then about missed chances for the hosts, who saw Darren Anderton strike the woodwork, while Paul Gascoigne would have surely scored had he been one boot size larger. As it was, penalties were required again and on this occasion it was Gareth Southgate who failed to convert the vital kick.
