Hodgson dismisses Lineker's 'dark ages' jibe

England manager Roy Hodgson has dismissed suggestions from Gary Lineker that their performance in the 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday was a return to the "dark ages".

Frank Lampard cancelled out Shane Long's opener at Wembley, and Lineker, who scored 48 goals for the Three Lions during his playing career, was left unimpressed with Hodgson's tactics on the night.

The Match of the Day presenter tweeted: "Even though results haven't been great, felt tactically England were maturing, but this is a step back to the dark ages of 2 lines of 4."

However, Hodgson refuted Lineker's claims by saying that he thought his team performed well during the stalemate.

"Oh well, that's a pity [that Lineker feels that way]. I thought we played well. What are the 'dark ages'?" Hodgson told reporters.

"I'm never surprised by what things are said. I can only tell you what I think. I'm not attempting to change opinions. If you think we played poorly, go away and write it.

"Don't expect me to sit here and satisfy you by agreeing because I think we played quite well."

England play Brazil at the Maracana this evening.
