Former England midfielder Peter Reid has claimed that Jordan Henderson, rather than Jack Wilshere, should be playing as a holding midfielder for Roy Hodgson's side.
Wilshere was used as the deepest player in a midfield diamond as England beat Switzerland 2-0 on Monday night, but Reid believes that Henderson, who also started the Euro 2016 qualifying match, is better suited to the role.
"I am not sure about Wilshere in the holding midfield role," Reid is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
"We have good forward players like Ross Barkley and Adam Lallana to come back but at the other end, when Phil Jones lost the ball at 0-0, if we were against top quality opposition, we would have been 1-0 down.
"That extra defensive shield is my one area of concern but we have time to improve on that. I think Henderson could go in there, he has great leg and could do a job."
England return to action against San Marino at Wembley on October 9.
