Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says that personal honours for England will be meaningless if he fails to win anything with his country.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has insisted that he is only concerned with securing silverware for England as opposed to individual records.

The 27-year-old, who has netted 35 goals in 81 appearances for the Three Lions, says that the possibility of becoming the country's top goalscorer would be meaningless if he never wins anything.

"Some people talk about records, but I'm not really too fussed," Rooney told Sport magazine. "I've always felt that, to be successful, you have to win trophies.

"I could end my career with England being record goalscorer and maybe even record caps-holder, but if you're not going to be successful, then it's pointless.

"That's what I play for England for - to try and help England be successful. That's the aim. It's not to see how many caps or goals I can get, it's to see if I can get a winner's medal."

At club level, Rooney has five Premier League winner's medals, two League Cups and a Champions League medal.
