Record England appearance holder Peter Shilton has said that Jack Butland should play against Italy tonight.
Butland was promoted to the England squad as a replacement for Fraser Forster, who withdrew due to injury, and will be the first Stoke City goalkeeper to play for England since Shilton's last appearance in 1990 if he plays tonight.
"I think Roy Hodgson has to play him really for the simple reason we obviously know what Joe Hart can do and Rob Green has already played and got experience," Shilton told The Sentinel.
"So I suppose in a way it's logical for Butland to be given some experience, in what I would call a high-class friendly in Italy, because we've got to take a look at him before the Euros next year.
"I would think he would get at least part of the game in Italy, if not all of it. If he gets his chance, I'll certainly be watching keenly."
Butland has made one appearance for England in a friendly against Italy in 2012 while on loan at Birmingham City.
