England debutant James Tarkowski is adamant that the VAR decision to award a penalty for his foul on Italy winger Federico Chiesa was incorrect.

England debutant James Tarkowski has expressed his disappointment after conceding a controversial penalty in Tuesday night's 1-1 friendly home draw with Italy.

Jamie Vardy had put the Three Lions ahead in the first half at Wembley Stadium, rifling past Azzurri goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Jesse Lingard's quick free kick.

However, a Video Assistant Referee review adjudged Tarkowski to have tripped Federico Chiesa in the penalty area just three minutes from time, and Lorenzo Insigne made no mistake from the spot.

Originally a penalty was not given but referee Deniz Aytekin consulted VAR and the spot kick was awarded, prompting criticism from several individuals within the England camp.

"It's never a penalty," Tarkowski told ITV Sport.

"I stood on his foot but I didn't think a lot of it. It is what it is - I'm not going to complain. It's been a great experience this week.

"It would have been nice to have two wins but I think there's a lot of positives to take. We look forward to the World Cup now."

England begin their World Cup campaign on June 18 against Tunisia, before taking on Panama on June 24 and Belgium four days later.
