FA "shocked and appalled" by Serbia events

The FA's Alex Horne urges UEFA to punish the Serbian FA for the events that unfolded during last night's Under-21 Euro 2013 qualifier.

The Football Association's general secretary Alex Horne has expressed the governing body's disbelief at the incidents that transpired during the Euro 2013 qualifier between England Under-21s and their Serbian counterparts last night.

England full-back Danny Rose was the subject of alleged racist abuse, while video footage has shown a number of missiles being thrown by Serbian supporters at England players throughout the 90 minutes.

"We were shocked and appalled by the disgraceful events that occurred in Serbia last night," Horne said in a statement. "Our players and staff were subjected to racial abuse, violence as well as missiles being thrown at them throughout the match. What occurred is inexcusable and not acceptable.

"After collating evidence from those present, including a senior UK Football Policing Unit representative, we are making a formal complaint to UEFA today.

"We call on UEFA to take the strongest possible action against the Serbian FA, their supporters and anyone found guilty of being involved in the numerous instances of violence and abuse."

Horne went on to admit that the FA would now have to give it much consideration before they considered playing a match in the Eastern European country again.

"No football team should be asked to play in any environment where racial abuse, violence and threatening behaviour is prevalent. We must question the validity of sending a team to Serbia in the future," he added.

"We look forward to UEFA dealing with last night's events as a matter of urgency."

In contrast, the Serbian FA released a statement earlier today that denied any wrongdoing by their fans or players.
