Danny Welbeck's first goal for the England senior side sends the Three Lions to Euro 2012 in winning form.

Danny Welbeck's first goal for the England senior side has sent the Three Lions off to Euro 2012 in winning form at the expense of Belgium of this afternoon.

The Manchester United striker opened his account during an first half that was largely dominated by the visiting Belgians.

Despite enjoying large spells in possession Belgium were restricted to efforts from distance. Their best chances fell to Alex Witsel and Eden Hazard, but neither were able to beat Joe Hart.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 36th minute. Ashley Young threaded a pass through to United teammate Welbeck, who beat Thomas Vermaelen for pace before going on to lift the ball over Simon Mignolet in the visiting goal.

Captain Steven Gerrard had two chances in quick succession to double England's advantage in stoppage time, but on both occasions his low shots were blocked.

Belgium began the second half in similar fashion to the way they started the first. Chelsea's latest addition Hazard had their opening chance when he curled an effort straight at Hart.

Anderlecht midfielder Guillaume Gillet went even closer 12 minutes from time when his powerful effort struck the outside of Hart's upright following a cut-back from Moussa Dembele.

England substitute Jermain Defoe suffered the same fate as Gillet four minutes later when he sent Theo Walcott's low pass against the post from a narrow angle.

Belgium continued to probe for an equaliser in the closing stages, but they were unable to breach Hart's net.
