Portuguese winger Simao has quelled suggestions that he attempted to engineer a move away from Espanyol in the summer.
A number of reports suggested that the 33-year-old wanted to leave the Catalan club after struggling last season, but the midfielder has denied such claims.
"Nobody at the club spoke with me about the possibility of me leaving. I did not see myself leaving in the summer. I came to Espanyol with the intention of contributing and to improve every day," Simao told reporters at a press conference.
"[Javier Aguirre] has been critical for me, but also for the club. With him we began to pick up points last season, he came in and did a very good job. He spoke face to face with all the players and told each one what he wanted.
"This year I have done pre-season, not like before. I am comfortable and I feel good physically and luckily the team has started the season well. We must keep to this path for the season. We have a very good squad, with people who are enthusiastic, and I am optimistic."
Espanyol currently sit sixth in the La Liga table.
