Everton midfielder Gareth Barry did not break his leg away at Sunderland, according to manager Roberto Martinez.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Gareth Barry did not suffer a broken leg during today's 1-1 draw away at Sunderland.

The midfielder was stretchered off early on at the Stadium of Light following a tackle with Jordi Gomez and he was immediately taken to hospital, with the fear being that he had snapped a bone in his lower leg.

However, Martinez has revealed that the X-ray came back clear, although the 33-year-old has damaged his ankle ligaments.

"Happy to confirm that it's not the broken leg we were worried about. There is damage to the ankle we must assess," the Toffees boss told reporters.

Barry joined Everton on a permanent basis during the summer following his release by Manchester City.
