Everton manager Roberto Martinez has described criticism of the loan system as "ridiculous" following comments made by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
Following the Gunners' 3-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday, the Frenchman claimed that having a number of loan players in the top flight gives teams an unfair advantage.
The Merseyside outfit have Romelu Lukaku, Gareth Barry and Gerard Deulofeu all on loan deals at Goodison Park.
In response to the criticism, Martinez said in Thursday's press conference: "To criticise us is ridiculous. It would be the same as criticising us for developing a lot of young players, and giving them a chance, which is what we have done this season.
"The loan system is something that has to be part of the game - we have seven players ourselves out on loan and you need to develop young players.
"It's just a question of finding a loan system that works. It has got its pros and cons, but from our point of view it works."
Everton are currently just one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal in the Premier League table with a game in hand.
