Roberto Martinez: 'We have to get up to speed'

Everton boss Roberto Martinez believes that his players have to use their final two pre-season matches to get up to speed ahead of the Premier League campaign.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has said that he is looking to take advantage of playing two games in as many days to bring his squad up to match fitness ahead of the Premier League season.

The Toffees face Leeds United later today at Elland Road and then members of his squad will play in Duncan Ferguson's testimonial match against Villarreal at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Martinez told the club's official website: "The reason that we put the two games together was because Duncan's testimonial is a big footballing event.

"It's a special moment that we all want to savour but in the same way we want to make sure every player gets 90 minutes under their belts before the start of the season. To be able to do it with two games, it will be perfect in terms of getting the full squad up to speed.

"We've got really strong opposition, which we are looking forward to, and having the other game 24 hours before will allow other players the chance to get 90 minutes before the start of the season, so we can complete what has been a very successful period to get the physical levels up to speed."

Everton play Watford on the opening day of the top-flight season at Goodison Park.
