Marko Arnautovic scored a penalty in stoppage time to hand Stoke City a dramatic 4-3 victory over Everton at Goodison Park this afternoon.

Romelu Lukaku had twice cancelled out Xherdan Shaqiri's goals before further strikes from Gerard Deulofeu and Joselu looked to have ensured a point apiece until Arnautovic added another twist to a thrilling encounter.

The visitors went into the match with only seven away goals to their name all season, but it was they who threatened first when Arnautovic flashed an effort wide of the far post when played through by Bojan Krkic.

The same duo combined shortly after for the opening goal of the game, with Bojan again finding Arnautovic, who this time helped it once more inside for Shaqiri to plant his first Premier League goal into the bottom corner.

Stoke's lead lasted only six minutes, however, before Everton levelled things up through the in-form Lukaku, who was left unmarked in the area to slot past Jack Butland after being found by James McCarthy's cleverly disguised pass.

There was almost a less familiar name on the scoreboard for the hosts shortly after the half-hour mark when Ross Barkley back-heeled the ball to Brendan Galloway, only for the left-back to drag an effort wide of the far post from the edge of the box.

It was Stoke who got the third goal of the game, however, as Shaqiri doubled his personal tally for the afternoon in some style right on the stroke of half time.

The Swiss winger latched on to a long diagonal ball forward before lofting a first-time half-volley over the head of Tim Howard while on the run, leaving Goodison Park in a stunned silence.

Everton continued to see more of the ball and ask more questions in the second half, eventually creating a chance around the hour mark when Arouna Kone blazed over from just outside the penalty area.

Roberto Martinez would not have to wait long for a second equaliser, however, and it was Lukaku again who got it, controlling Tom Cleverley's long pass over the top on his chest before steering the finish past Butland and into the bottom corner.

Stoke suddenly found themselves on the ropes and Everton went close through Steven Naismith's deflected effort before taking the lead for the first time in the game.

Lukaku was again involved, sliding a pass through to Barkley, who sent his low ball across the six-yard box for Deulofeu to apply the simple finish.

Deulofeu came close again shortly afterwards, but there was to be another twist in the saga as Joselu levelled things up yet again with 10 minutes remaining, lashing a volley into the empty net after Howard could only get a touch to Arnautovic's cross.

There was more late drama to come too as John Stones was controversially penalised for a foul on Arnautovic inside the area, and the Stoke winger slammed the resulting penalty down the middle in stoppage time to clinch all three points at the death.
