Everton scout Andy De Smet has confirmed that the club have kept tabs on Bjorn Engels's development over recent months.
The 21-year-old was in impressive form for Club Brugge last season, so much so that he has been included in Marc Wilmots's provisional Belgium squad for Euro 2016.
However, De Smet stressed that while the Toffees have been keeping a close eye on the defender, a transfer may not necessarily be in the offing.
"He is in any case a central defender with a lot of qualities in terms of building from the back, so in that sense Bjorn's profile fits in there," he told Sport/Football Magazine.
"Now, all English clubs follow a lot of young players long and intensively in order to correctly assess their potential and scope for growth.
"But just because the media say a scout is there in the stands doesn't necessarily mean a transfer is imminent."
Engels has made over 50 senior appearances for Brugge.
