On this day in 1992, Gary Lineker received the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award for the second time.

In what turned out to be his final season in European football before he moved to Nagoya Grampus in Japan, Tottenham striker Lineker was again recognised for his achievements by the members of the FWA.

He had collected his first English trophy with Spurs, the 1991 FA Cup, and was the second highest goalscorer in the 1991-92 Division One season – behind only Ian Wright – with 28 goals across 35 games.

His last goal in English football came on the last day of the season in a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Lineker first won the award in 1986 while at Everton after becoming the league's top goalscorer with 30 goals, including three hat-tricks, to help the Toffees finish second in the top flight.

The England forward had then won the Golden Boot for his six goals at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
