Germany World Cup-winning captain Philipp Lahm has revealed that he made the decision to retire from international football before the tournament in Brazil.
The 30-year-old has opted to walk away from the German side after they defeated Argentina to seal their fourth world title last weekend.
Despite making the decision last season, the full-back, who can also play in midfield, only told manager Joachim Low the day after Germany's triumph.
Lahm told newspaper Bild: "I told Jogi Low on Monday that I will resign. This decision came to me during last season."
Lahm made 113 appearances for his country following his debut in 2004.
