A last-minute winner from Leroy Fer gives the Netherlands a dramatic 3-2 win over Germany at the Under-21 European Championships.

Netherlands have snatched all three points with a last-minute winner against Germany at the Under-21 European Championships.

Germany had fought back from two down with a late Lewis Holtby equaliser, but were undone with the final kick of the game as Leroy Fer headed in from a corner to make it 3-2.

The Dutch started the game well, with Kevin Strootman and Luuk de Jong combining well to set up Adam Maher. The midfielder's close-range effort was well-parried by the goalkeeper though.

Germany's main threats were coming through Tottenham Hotspur man Holtby, who picked out Pierre-Michel Lasogga with a pass midway through the half, but the striker's effort was comfortably saved.

On 28 minutes, the Netherlands took the lead with Maher reacting well to a short corner before firing past Bernd Leno with a swerving shot from a difficult angle.

They doubled their lead shortly before the break, thanks to Georgino Wijnaldum, who after skipping past a couple of challenges, fired the ball towards goal. Leno looked to have dealt with it, only for the ball to squeeze underneath him and into the net.

Within minutes of the second half kickoff, Germany scored from the penalty spot. Sebastian Rudy calmly slotted the ball home after Holtby had been brought down by the goalkeeper.

The match opened up after that as both sides had chances. First Stefan de Vrij flicked a header just over the crossbar for the Dutch, before Kevin Volland found some space before curling an effort against the bar at the other end.

The Germans eventually found an equaliser, as Holtby fired the ball into the bottom corner from just outside the box, with five minutes to go.

Just as they thought they had earned a credible draw, Germany's hearts were broken, as Fer wandered unmarked into the box to head home Marco van Ginkel's corner in the 93rd minute.
