Hamburger SV boss Bert van Marwijk has said that his side are embroiled in a relegation battle following yesterday's 3-2 loss at home to Mainz 05.
Shinji Okazaki's 92nd-minute winner for the visitors means that Van Marwijk's side are now 14th in the Bundesliga, just two points better off than 16th-placed Freiburg.
"That's the reality, just look at the points," Van Marwijk told Sky Sports News in the aftermath of yesterday's loss.
"The players have got to be aware that we need to put as many points in the bank as will be sufficient as quickly as possible.
"I'm not one who gives up, though. Situations like these actually give me more energy."
Hamburg finished last season in seventh place.
