Mick McCarthy says that Tyrone Mings proved why Ipswich were so keen to keep him this summer by playing a starring role in the Championship victory over Brighton.

Mick McCarthy has said that Tyrone Mings proved why Ipswich Town were so keen to keep him this summer with his display in the victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 21-year-old played a starring role as the Tractor Boys won 2-0 on Tuesday to record their second Championship success at Portman Road in four days.

Ipswich apparently rebuffed transfer deadline day interest in Mings, who Ipswich signed from non-league Chippenham Town in 2012, and McCarthy is delighted with how the left-back is developing.

He told reporters: "Tyrone showed why I wanted him in my team, why I wanted him at this club, and why he wasn't for sale.

"He wasn't going anywhere and no amount of euros or pounds was going to make a difference. We picked him up from relative obscurity and helped him become a player. Now I want him to help us become a good team."

He added: "It has been a good few days and a good haul from two home games."

Mings made only four Championship starts last season, but is now first choice following the sale of Aaron Cresswell to West Ham United.
