Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy: 'Tyrone Mings could play for England'

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy believes that Bournemouth's club-record signing Tyrone Mings will play for England one day.

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has tipped Tyrone Mings to play for England one day following his move to Bournemouth.

The Cherries broke their transfer record last month to sign Mings, 22, in a deal reported to be worth £8m that saw Brett Pitman and Ryan Fraser move in the other direction.

Mings only had one full season at Championship level, but McCarthy believes that he was the best left-back in the league in 2014-15 and feels he can push on under Eddie Howe at Bournemouth.

Earlier today, Sports Mole exclusively caught up with McCarthy ahead of tomorrow's Sky Bet Transfer Fund draw, in which Ipswich are one of 10 clubs in with a chance of winning £250,000 to spend on transfers, and he was full of praise for Mings.

"Bournemouth have signed a fantastic left-back who's got huge potential and the potential to get in that England squad at some stage if he continues to progress like he has," McCarthy said.

The Ipswich boss admitted that the deal was "bittersweet", but believes that it was excellent business on the Blues' part.

"Yeah, it's kind of bittersweet," he said. "We got him for 10 grand and sold him for eight million quid. That's pretty good business I think! It's slightly bitter that we lose the best left-back in the league, but we've got Jonathan Parr, who signed to play there.

"It's very sweet in terms of the deal. I mean £8m for a Championship left-back, I don't think there's too many of them gone. He was the best left-back in the league in my view and I think the price tag would back that up."
