Leonardo Bonucci has revealed the reasons behind his decision to gag Mario Balotelli after the striker scored during Italy's 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland last night.
The defender was first to reach Balotelli, who appeared to be aiming a verbal assault at his own bench.
As a result, Bonucci covered the Manchester City striker's mouth with the palm of his hand to prevent him from getting into any trouble.
"What he said [when he scored], he said in English and I didn't understand," said Bonucci. "So I put my hand in front of his mouth just in case, because Mario is instinctive but that is also his strength."
Balotelli started the match as a substitute following two starts without a goal.
