Antonio Cassano shocked reporters today by claiming that he would want nothing to do with gay teammates.
The enigmatic striker has had a turbulent career, and is looking to finally make an impact at a major tournament, but faces backlash over his comments.
"Are there any gay players? Cesare Prandelli told me you'd ask that question," said the Milan striker.
"It's their problem. If they are gay, then that's their problem.
"If I say what I really think, then there's going to be chaos. Are there any gays in the locker room? I hope not. In any case, it's their problem and nothing to do with me."
Italian football figures have had their opinions on homophobia in the game in recent weeks, with coach Cesere Prandelli speaking out in support of gay players.
Cassano has never been far away from the headlines, suffering a stroke just a few months ago that threatened to rule him out of Euro 2012.
Italy next face Croatia on Thursday.
