Danny Drinkwater "would understand" England omission

Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater "would understand" if Roy Hodgson left him out of the 23-man England squad for Euro 2016.

Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater has insisted that he "would understand" if Roy Hodgson omitted him from his final 23-man squad for the European Championships in France.

Following an impressive campaign with Premier League winners Leicester, Drinkwater was named in England's provisional Euro 2016 squad and has been tipped to make the final selection this summer.

The 26-year-old, however, has vowed to accept whatever decision is made due to the "ridiculous quality" that he is up against for a midfield position.

"The midfield has a lot of quality and the players we are talking about have ridiculous quality. They have played at the top level so I would understand," Drinkwater told reporters.

"If it happens I will understand and I'll work hard again next season and see where it goes. But in the meantime making the final 23 is the next challenge. I think that is every player's aim and there are 26 players fighting for 23 places so it's going to be tough.

"I'm just going to train how I usually train and work really hard and if I'm in the 23 I'm in the 23. There are games to play and everyone needs to stay fit and I need to keep my fitness, and hopefully I'll be there at the end."

Drinkwater scored three times and provided eight assists in 35 Premier League appearances during the 2015-16 season.
