Ben Chilwell can become an England regular – Claude Puel

Chilwell now has three England caps after making his debut in September.

Leicester boss Claude Puel has backed Ben Chilwell to become an England regular after his latest Three Lions role.

The left-back played in the goalless Nations League draw in Croatia before Monday’s impressive 3-2 win in Spain.

Chilwell got the chance after Danny Rose and Luke Shaw pulled out injured and now has three caps after making his debut in the 1-0 win over Switzerland in Leicester.

Puel, who is preparing for Monday’s trip to Arsenal, said: “He can compete with these players because he has been consistent since last season, he finished very well, and started this season very well.

“For a young player to find consistency in his play and good performance all the time is difficult. He can defend well, attack well, he is the complete player and a valuable player for us.

“He can become a valuable player for the national team and can compete with the other players. For a player at 21, his consistency is impressive.

“It’s a good memory for them (Chilwell and Harry Maguire), winning the way they did against Spain and I am happy for both – and Maddy (James Maddison) also.

“Ben played well and it’s fantastic for a young player to start in the national team and to play in two difficult games away.”

Chilwell has returned fit but Wes Morgan is suspended after his red card against Everton, while Demarai Gray (ankle) and Matty James (Achilles) are injured.

It was Morgan’s second dismissal of the season after he was sent off against Bournemouth and Puel admits the skipper must manage himself better when already on a caution.

He said: “He is unlucky with the referee’s decision last time and his sending off at Bournemouth, the second yellow was not a foul.

“The second yellow against Everton was harsh but he needed to manage the situation better, without giving the referee the opportunity to send him off.

“We will see, but it was difficult to lose Wes after the 60th minute (against Everton). I hope he can manage this matter for the future.”
