The second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy threw up a number of shocks and plenty of drama this evening.
The game of the day saw 10-man Dagenham & Redbridge beat Southend 5-2 following a remarkable spell of six goals in the space of 15 minutes at the start of the second half.
Crawley Town were also knocked out by Newport County in another exciting game which featured an upset, a comeback, an own goal, a penalty, a red card and even a goal from the halfway line.
Holders Crewe Alexandra were eliminated in emphatic fashion as League Two side Fleetwood Town thrashed them 4-0.

Good evening! Thank you very much for joining Sports Mole for tonight's coverage of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy second round! We have 16 matches to bring you this evening featuring some of the biggest hitters from League One and Two, so let's get straight down to business!
Tonight's kickoffs are slightly staggered, with the first match starting in less than half an hour as Crawley Town host Newport County. Three matches will get underway at 7.30pm, while the remaining 12 kick off at 7.45pm. Let's have a look at what we have in store for us tonight, starting with that Crawley match.
CRAWLEY VS. NEWPORT: On paper, this looks like an easy enough match for Crawley. They sit more than an entire division above Newport in the Football League, occupying eighth in League One to Newport's ninth in League Two. Crawley are also unbeaten in six matches, while Newport drew away to Bury in their last outing.
PORT VALE VS. ROCHDALE: This has the potential to be an upset as 12th in League One Part Vale take on eighth in League Two Rochdale. Rochdale slipped up against Portsmouth at the weekend, losing 3-0, but before that had won four consecutive matches. Port Vale, however, are unbeaten in three and have lost just one of their last six games.
PETERBOROUGH VS. BRENTFORD: Peterborough have been in fine form in League One recently, catapulting themselves up to second place with four wins in their last five games, dropping just five points from their opening 10 matches altogether. Brentford, meanwhile, are 10th in League One going into this one and have lost three of their last five matches.
LEYTON ORIENT VS. COVENTRY: Leyton Orient have set the bar for how to start a season throughout English football this year. They won their opening eight league matches and remain unbeaten having drawn their last two outings. In fact, their only loss in all competitions so far this season came against Premier League side Hull in the League Cup, and even then it was after extra time. Crisis club Coventry, meanwhile, have provided us with plenty of goals and entertainment but find themselves down in 18th in the table. Their form has increased recently, however, with just two defeats in their last nine games.
Those are the early kickoff covered. The latter three will get underway at 7.30pm and, on paper, should provide plenty of entertainment. The Orient vs. Coventry match is a particularly intriguing encounter as the Sky Blues are in decent form having eradicated their points deduction very quickly.
Still, I fancy Orient to get a win in that match. They have been in fine form in all competitions so far this season and, although the two draws in their last two matches constitutes a wobble in form for them, they look destined for promotion if they can keep that form up.
Right, on to the 7.45pm kickoffs, and there are plenty to get through, including the likes of Wolves in action and the match I fancy to be the upset of the day.
YORK VS. ROTHERHAM: York may just fancy their chances of springing an upset on their own turf in this match. They have won their last two, although an eight-match winless streak before that has left them 16th in League Two. Rotherham, meanwhile, sit sixth in League One and have lost just one of their last 11 matches if you discount the 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the League Cup.
SHEFF UTD VS. HARTLEPOOL: Two struggling teams collide at Bramall Lane, but the hosts have the advantage of struggling in a higher division. They are 22nd in League One and have picked up just two points from their last nine league matches. Hartlepool, meanwhile, won 4-1 at the weekend but still sit 19th in League Two having won just one other league match all season.
WOLVES VS. NOTTS COUNTY: Wolves are just one point off the top of League One having won eight of their last nine league matches, a record that stretched to nine in their last 10 if you include the win via penalties over Walsall in the first round of this competition. Notts County, meanwhile, are hovering perilously close to the relegation zone having won just two matches all season, although those two victories have come in the last three games.
MANSFIELD VS. CHESTERFIELD: This one looks like being one of the most intriguing matches of the night as two high-flying League Two clubs go head to head. Mansfield are fifth in the division and have lost just once in nine games, although that was a 4-1 drubbing at home to Hartlepool in their last outing. Chesterfield sit top of the table but have lost their last two having remained unbeaten for the first eight games.
That Mansfield vs. Chesterfield tie is a real eye-catcher and I wouldn't like to call it. They have both had disappointing results in their last outing, with Chesterfield in particular being shocked by a 4-3 defeat to Morecambe having taken a 3-0 lead. This is one match that could go either way, although Mansfield did beat Chesterfield less than two weeks ago in the league.
Wolves will also be hoping to continue their recent good form, but Notts County showed in their League Cup match against Liverpool that they are no pushovers when it comes to cup competitions. Sheffield United have been in dire form, without a win since the opening day of the season, and another defeat this evening would really hurt the Blades.
KICKOFF: Our first match of the evening is underway! Crawley Town and Newport County are the lucky teams to get us started tonight on what will hopefully be an action-packed night of football.
FLEETWOOD VS. CREWE: This is my pick for the most likely upset of the night. Fleetwood are flying high in second in League Two and have lost just once in their last six games in all competitions. Crewe, meanwhile, are struggling in League One having not won any of their last seven games in a spell that has included some hefty defeats. They know how to traverse this tournament, however, having won it last season.
MORECAMBE VS. CARLISLE: Morecambe come into this one fresh off the back of their incredible 4-3 win over Chesterfield, a match that saw them come from 3-0 down at half time to eventually win with less than five minutes remaining. That extended their unbeaten streak to six games and lifted them to sixth in League Two. Carlisle, meanwhile, are 13th in League One having hit a good patch of form following a poor start to the season. This one could also be an upset tonight.
PRESTON VS. OLDHAM: It was all looking rosy for Preston until the weekend, when their five-game winning streak ended at the hands of Peterborough. Still, they sit fifth in League One, 12 places above Oldham, who have picked up just two points from their last six league games.
OXFORD VS. PORTSMOUTH: Oxford will go into this all-League Two clash fairly confident of a win despite their patchy form of late. They have lost two of their last three games, but those two defeats are their only ones of the season in the league so far. Portsmouth sit 11 places below Oxford in 15th place and, like their opponents tonight, have won two, lost two and drawn one of their last five games.
That batch of four matches contains two matches which could realistically throw up shocks. I would back Fleetwood to win at home to Crewe despite them being in a lower division, while Morecambe to beat Carlisle is a longer shot but one that I could see happening.
GOAL! Crawley 1-0 Newport
We have our first goal of the evening and it may well be an own goal from Newport to hand Crawley Town the lead in the early kickoff. Hurst's low cross was turned in by someone, with Sinclair being credited with the goal although that may get reviewed by the dubious goals committee.
SWINDON VS. PLYMOUTH: This should be one of the easier ones to call tonight as League One Swindon host League Two Plymouth. Swindon haven't been in great form recently having lost three of their last five games, but their record is better than Plymouth's over the same period. They have just one win from their last five and have not tasted victory in their last four matches.
WYCOMBE VS. BRISTOL CITY: This is my outside shout for an upset tonight. Wycombe are 13th in League Two and have lost their last two matches, but before that they put together a decent five-match unbeaten streak. City, meanwhile, are only out of the League One relegation zone on goal difference and have not won a single league match this season.
SOUTHEND VS. DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE: This one should be a fairly close encounter that both sides will think they can win. Southend are 14th in League Two but have only won one of their last seven matches - against Oxford at the weekend. Dagenham, meanwhile, are unbeaten in six in all competitions and sit 10th in the table.
GOAL! Crawley Town 2-0 Newport County
As expected, Crawley are taking control of their match against Newport now. They have doubled their lead at Broadfield Stadium, with Emile Sinclair claiming his second of the night - although that first one remains dubious and could be stripped away from him.
I say as expected, but that second goal was anything but expected. It was, in fact, Mike Jones who got the goal, and he scored it from the halfway line. What a moment for him and Crawley, who have scored one messy goal and one sublime one. The keeper was out of his goal, but that was still some finish by Jones.
STEVENAGE VS. MK DONS: Finally, out-of-form Stevenage take on MK Dons in a match that the away side will be confident of winning. Stevenage have lost their last four matches and are without a win in seven in all competitions. They are how in 23rd in League One, while MK Dons are sitting pretty just outside the playoff places in seventh. They lost their last outing, but have only been defeated twice in the league this season.
KICKOFF: The 7.30pm matches are beginning to get underway now, which means we will have four games on the go in the next minute or so. Leyton Orient vs. Coventry, Peterborough vs. Brentford and Port Vale vs. Rochdale are the matches that are starting now.
There is plenty of unorthodox drama going on over at Broadfield Stadium in Crawley. Following that goal from the halfway line, the referee has just been forced off through injury, being replaced by his linesman who, in turn, is replaced by the fourth official. The original referee has now taken up the role of fourth official, so a triple change for the officials.
Newport have just had a chance in that match, but Crow was unable finish after a good move by the visitors. He curled his effort just past the post, keeping Crawley's 2-0 lead intact.

There are five minutes left of the first half in Crawley's match against Newport, and the hosts still lead 2-0 thanks, in part, to a stunning strike from the halfway line by Mike Jones. Nothing of any real note to report from the other three matches in progress yet.
Orient have had a couple of decent sights of goal early on, but nothing to get too excited about. Shaun Batt's effort from 25 yards was comfortably saved in the first minute while Yohann Lasimant has just fired over from 16 yards.

There is a lifeline for Newport! Just two minutes before the break they grab a goal back through Chris Zebroski to make it 2-1. Could the League Two side come back and produce an upset?
Meanwhile, Leyton Orient are on top in the opening stages of their match against Coventry but neither side has seriously troubled the opposition keeper thus far. Coventry rarely have a boring game, however, so we can expect some goals from that match sooner or later.
KICKOFFS: It is time for the rest of tonight's matches to get underway. One by one, the 12 remaining games are beginning around the country, and this evening's action is now in full flow.

Peterborough have taken the lead at the London Road Stadium and could be on their way to continuing their fine recent form thanks to an own goal from Martin Taylor. Oldham, meanwhile, have scored a remarkably quick opening goal against Preston, with Daniel Philliskirk scoring within one minute of kickoff.
HALF TIME: Crawley Town 2-1 Newport County
GOAL! Swindon Town 0-1 Plymouth Argyle
There could be a shock in store at the County Ground in Swindon! League Two side Plymouth have just taken an early lead over their League One hosts.
GOAL! Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 Bristol City
Not a great couple of minutes for the West Country as Bristol City also go behind. I earmarked this one as a potential shock in the making, and Wycombe have started as if that may be the case.
GOAL! Preston North End 0-2 Oldham Athletic
Wow, what a start it has been from Oldham! Having taken the lead after just 15 seconds they have now gone 2-0 up within 10 minutes. James Wesolowski got the goal this time, and Oldham look like turning their poor form around tonight.
The Plymouth goal was scored by Andre Blackman, by the way, and it may have had a slight deflection on it. Wycombe's goal came from Billy Knott, and what a goal it was as he slammed the ball into the roof of the net.
Meanwhile, at the Molineux it sounds like Notts County have started the better side. It is still very early in the match and it remains 0-0, however. You can follow that game live with us by clicking here.

Rotherham have taken the lead against York City and it is another own goal for the night as Chris Smith heads the ball past his own keeper. Swindon have levelled the scores with a header of their own through Jack Barthram, who has made it 1-1 against Plymouth. Newport have also managed an unlikely equaliser to make it 2-2 against Crawley having been 2-0 down. Chapman scored the spot, while James Hurst has been sent off for the hosts.

GOAL! Stevenage 0-1 MK Dons
Stevenage thought that they had the lead a couple of minutes ago but it was ruled out for offside. At the other end, MK Dons have now taken the lead from the spot courtesy of Shaun Williams strike. Meanwhile, Rochdale have taken the lead against Port Vale through Joe Rafferty.
GOAL! Southend United 0-1 Dagenham & Redbridge
GOAL! Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 Bristol City
Zavon Hines has nodded Dagenham & Redbridge into a 1-0 lead against Southend in their all-League Two clash. Elsewhere, Wycombe have doubled their lead over Bristol City through Matt Bloomfield's nice finish. They now lead 2-0 and look on course to pull off a shock this evening.
Just seven of the 16 matches tonight remain goalless as the 7.30pm kickoffs near half time. In the day's early kickoff Crawley are still drawing 2-2 with Newport having blown a two-goal lead. The hosts may be hanging on for a draw now as well as they have been reduced to 10 men.

Incredibly, Newport County have now taken the lead against Crawley! The League One side looked to be cruising through to the next round when they took a 2-0 lead after 23 minutes, but Newport have battled back and now lead against 3-2 against the 10 men of Crawley. A shock is on the cards there, and the early kickoff looks like it could be the game of the night.
HALF TIME: Leyton Orient 0-0 Coventry City
That Newport goal was another own goal - we've had quite a few of them already tonight. This time Connor Essam was the guilty party for Crawley.

When it rains, it pours. Nothing is going right for Sheffield United at the moment and they have just gone behind to League Two strugglers Hartlepool. James Poole got the goal just eight minutes before the break with a volleyed finish.
GOAL! Fleetwood Town 1-0 Crewe Alexandra
This was my other tip for an upset this evening, and it looks like the JPT holders Crewe could be crashing out in the second round. David Ball has put Fleetwood ahead with a lovely curled finish into the top right corner.
There hasn't been much action to speak of from the Molineux yet this evening as Wolves and Notts County still search for the opening goal. I'm sure it will liven up soon enough, however, and you can follow it live with us here.

It's two goals in quick succession for Fleetwood as they move even closer to a surprise win over the current holders Crewe. This time the goal came from Jon Parkin, whose header deflected past the keeper.
York City thought that they had equalised against Rotherham late in the first half of their clash, but the goal was disallowed and the League One side still lead 1-0.
HALF TIMES: The 7.45pm kickoffs are beginning to enter half time now, but the Crawley match is still live and set for an exciting finish. The three 7.30pm matches should also get back underway very shortly.

It has been a great day for away teams so far. In all of the 16 matches taking place tonight, only three home teams are currently winning. Six matches are currently draws, which would result in them going straight to penalties rather than extra time in the JPT, while seven games are being won by the away team as things stand.
Let's get back to the Crawley match, which looks like being the game of the day so far. There is a little over 10 minutes left and Newport still lead 3-2 having recovered from 2-0 down. Ten-man Crawley have just come close to an equaliser, but Stephens made a fine save to deny Proctor.
That match has also provided us with the moment, and goal, of the night so far. Mike Jones put Crawley 2-0 up with a strike from the halfway line, at which point life couldn't have got much better for the hosts. They have since had a man sent off and lost their lead, however, with what looks like being the winner scored by their own man.
York vs. Rotherham is the first of the 7.45pm kickoffs to get back underway for the second half, closely followed by Fleetwood against the holders Crewe. The rest will follow soon enough, and the action will be back to the frenetic pace of the last hour or so.

Well, they didn't waste much time did they?! Fleetwood are surely now through to the next round as they take a commanding 3-0 lead over Crewe. Nathan Pond got the goal that looks to have consigned the reigning JPT champions to an early exit in this year's tournament.

Swindon follow in the footsteps of Fleetwood by making a goalscoring start to the second half. They have come from behind the take the lead against Plymouth courtesy of a curling Nicky Ajose finish at the County Ground.

Stevenage have found an equaliser early in the second half thanks to Francois Zoko's flicked finish, which has cancelled out Williams's early penalty for the Dons. That is a big goal for a Stevenage side who have not experienced much joy recently.

The first match of the night comes to an end, and what a game it was. It ends in disappointment for Crawley Town, who have blown a 2-0 lead to fall to a shock defeat against League Two's Newport County. The hosts were reduced to 10 men in the second half and Newport's winner came courtesy of an own goal. That match had it all - an oggy, a penalty, a red card and a goal from the halfway line.

Peterborough have doubled their lead against Brentford, adding to the earlier own goal with a penalty that was duly dispatched by Grant McCann. Bristol City have given themselves a lifeline against Wycombe, meanwhile, pulling a goal back through Brendan Moloney.

It is all happening at the Roots Hall Stadium! A third goal in less than 10 minutes has seen Dagenham draw level against Southend once again. Brian Saah got the goal with a powerful header.

Oh my word, there really is only one place to start and that is at Southend once again! Having scored twice in as many minutes at the start of the half to take the lead, Southend have now conceded two in just as short a space of time and Dagenham lead. That is four goals in the last 10 minutes, and it looks like this game may challenge the Crawley vs. Newport one for game of the day!

Right, there is a bit of action to catch up on. Stevenage have turned things round against MK Dons with a penalty of their, which was converted by Morais, while Rotherham have doubled their advantage over York, also via a penalty. Lots of spot kicks tonight.

What on earth is going on at the Roots Hill Stadium?! It was 1-0 after 50 minutes and now, 15 minutes later, Dagenham lead 5-2! What an incredible turn of events. Dickson got the Daggers' fourth following a mistake by Paul Smith and he doubled his personally tally almost immediately to make it five for the visitors. I've never seen a goal rush like it!
Apologies, Obafemi got the fifth goal for Dagenham - the excitement is getting to me too! Let's get to Peterborough where Brentford have pulled a late goal back through Ben Nugent. They now trail 2-1 with around five minutes remaining. Rotherham have made it two goals in quick succession to surely book their place in the next round at the expense of York. Revell got the third goal for them with a bullet header.
Portsmouth have also broken the deadlock in their match against Oxford United thanks to a fine solo goal from Patrick Agyemang.
GOAL! Mansfield Town 0-1 Chesterfield
Chesterfield have also broken the deadlock in their match, taking a 1-0 lead over Mansfield in their match with just under 20 minutes remaining.
Gary McSheffrey got that goal for Chesterfield, by the way. Meanwhile, the 7.30pm matches are entering their final stages now and none of them are settled by any means yet. Leyton Orient and Coventry are heading for penalties as things stand, while Peterborough and Rochdale only have slender one-goal leads.
It has now been 10 minutes since we had a goal in the Southend vs. Dagenham & Redbridge match - what is going on guys? Still 5-2 to the visitors there after an unbelievable spell of six goals in 15 minutes.

Peterborough are safely through to the next round despite a late scare against Brentford. Will they be joined in the draw by Leyton Orient or Coventry City? A penalty shoot-out will decide that question after their 90 minutes ended goalless.
FULL TIME: Port Vale 0-1 Rochdale
Rochdale will certainly be in the draw thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Port Vale. That is a shock, it must be said, with almost an entire division separating the teams. That is three matches finished and two shocks so far - good to see that the magic of the cup extends as far down as the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Portsmouth have surely now sealed their place in the next round with a second goal against Oxford. This time it is John Marquis who got the goal to make it 2-0 to Pompey.
It is advantage Leyton Orient in the penalty shoot-out as they lead Coventry 3-2 having taken three kicks each. Moussa was the man who missed for the visitors, seeing his spot kick saved.
Fleck has also just hit one wide for the Sky Blues, while Lloyd James scored his to make it 4-2. It looks like Leyton Orient will be in the hat for the next round!

Leyton Orient are indeed into the next round, and they will be joined there by Fleetwood Town as they have now taken a 4-0 lead over the holders Crewe thanks to Matt Blair's goal. I predicted a shock in this match, but I didn't see the hosts winning so emphatically. This will really hurt Crewe.
RED CARD! Gavin Hoyte (Dagenham & Redbridge)

As if the match was lacking drama, Dagenham & Redbridge have been reduced to 10 men after Gavin Hoyte was shown a straight red card. It should hurt them too much however as they have a 5-2 lead going into the closing stages. It will be a nervy finish for Portsmouth, though, as Oxford have pulled a goal back.

Just one match still being played as Chesterfield look to hold on to their 1-0 lead over Mansfield, and two matches have gone to penalties on a dramatic night of JPT football.
All square in both shoot-outs so far. Wolves, Notts County, Morecambe and Carlisle have all scored their opening spot kicks.
It is now 2-2 in the Morecambe shoot-out but Wolves have just missed, giving Notts County an early chance to take control.
Which they do! Labadie scores for the Magpies to make it 2-1 after two kicks each. Still faultless at Morecambe as both sides have scored their opening three kicks.
Oh Wolves have missed another! Their last two kicks have been blazed over the crossbar, and Notts County aren't making mistakes. They now lead 3-1.

So ends another superb night of Johnstone's Paint Trophy football. It may not have the glamour and big names of the Champions League and Premier League, but you won't find more excitement anywhere else than this tournament. Stanley Matthews once said not to mistake excitement for quality, but when you have as much excitement as that then you can turn a blind eye to a little less quality!
The two games that really caught the eye this evening were Crawley Town 2-3 Newport County and Southend 2-5 Dagenham & Redbridge. The first had everything you could ask for in a match - an upset, a red card, a penalty, a comeback, an own goal and even a goal from the halfway line! It was a great way to kick off the evening's football in what was the early match.
My game of the day has to go to the Southend and Dagenham match, however. It was 1-0 to the visitors in the 50th minute but, by the 65th, they led 5-2. Southend struck twice in quick succession to take the lead before Dagenham scored four goals in eight minutes to regain the lead. That is a spell of six goals in 15 minutes, a goalrush the likes of which I've never seen before.
