Xherdan Shaqiri scored six minutes from time as Switzerland moved into second in Group E with a dramatic win away to Lithuania.
The Swiss are now six points behind leaders England, but they sit in the final automatic qualification spot, three points ahead of Slovenia.
Granit Xhaka wasted an early opportunity to put the visitors ahead when he fired wide, but it would be the hosts who drew first blood midway through the second half.
Their breakthrough came when Egidijus Vaitkunas teed up Fedor Cernych 12 yards out and the Lithuanian forward steered the ball past Yann Sommer.
However, Switzerland hit back almost instantly after Blerim Dzemaili's headed pass allowed Josip Drmic to level the qualifier with 21 minutes left.
Vladimir Petkovic's side secured all three points in the dying minutes as Shaqiri's sweetly-struck shot found the bottom corner of Emilijus Zubas's net.
