Top 25 Liverpool players of the Premier League era - #22

Sports Mole's countdown of the top 25 Liverpool players in Premier League history continues with number 22 - Luis Garcia.

Luis Garcia

Luis Garcia was part of the Spanish revolution under Rafael Benitez upon his arrival at the club in 2004, becoming one of six players to move to Anfield from La Liga that summer.

Not all of them were successful, but Garcia more than repaid his £6m transfer fee in his first season at Anfield, during which time he scored the winner in a Merseyside derby and, even more importantly, the winning goals in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of their run to the 2005 Champions League trophy.

It was that controversial goal against Chelsea in the semi-final which proved to be the defining moment of his Liverpool career - his fifth strike of the Champions League knockout stages that season.

Garcia was also an important part of Liverpool's FA Cup triumph in 2006 and went on to help the club to another Champions League final a year later, but a serious knee injury effectively ended his Anfield career after just three seasons before he moved back to Atletico Madrid in 2007.

The Spaniard's impact in the Premier League was not quite as spectacular as his Champions League exploits, with 18 goals in 77 league games compared to 11 in 32 European outings, but he remains a popular figure at Anfield despite his relatively brief time at the club.
