Sam Allardyce: 'Liverpool need two teams'

West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce believes that Liverpool need a bigger squad to cope with the demands of playing in the Champions League as well as the Premier League.

West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce has claimed that Liverpool will need to have two teams to compete in the Premier League and the Champions League.

The Reds sustained their second defeat in a row in the top flight as they fell to a 3-1 defeat to the Hammers on Saturday.

Allardyce feels that Brendan Rodgers's side have to learn from the example of Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson, who enjoyed success on both fronts due to the strength in depth in their squad.

He told reporters: "When you speak to the top man, which was Fergie, you have got to have two teams. You've got to have one for Europe and one for the Premier League, particularly the game after.

"A Premier League game can't have the same significance as a Champions League game. Like Brendan Rodgers says, it becomes your bread and butter, the Champions League's your glory."

West Ham are eighth in the Premier League following their victory over Liverpool.
