Jamie Carragher: 'Liverpool title challenge will take four years'

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher doesn't believe that his side will challenge for the Premier League title in the next two years.

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that the club won't be able to challenge for the Premier League title for another four or five years.

Carragher will retire at the end of the season after 16 years with the Reds and he feels that the club need to reach the Champions League and consolidate their position in the top four before they think about challenging for the title.

Carragher told the Daily Mail: "If you're talking about being champions in the next two years, I would say no, because the target at the moment is to get back in the top four. But if you're looking ahead four or five years, why not?

"The disappointing thing about the last few years is where we have finished in the league. First and foremost, we have to try to get back in the top four rather than starting the season talking about titles and trophies.

"The first step is to get into those Champions League places, get extra revenue to attract players and improve your team, and go from there."

Liverpool finish their season against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield later today.
