Andy Carroll: Being benched is disappointing

Andy Carroll insists that he will "work harder" in order to be a regular in the starting lineup for Liverpool.

Liverpool striker Andy Carroll has admitted that he has been "disappointed" at being left on the bench for the Reds but insists that he has earned a spot in Kenny Dalglish's starting lineup.

The former Newcastle United frontman faced criticism in the early stages of the season for not performing to a level worthy of his £35m price tag.

The 22-year-old, who has been on the bench for Liverpool's recent fixtures, was chosen to start against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend and netted the winner in the Reds' 2-0 victory at the Hawthorns.

"I must admit I have been disappointed to be on the bench," said Carroll. "I have been working hard to get my place and I think I have earned it. I played well last week and getting a goal as well this weekend was even better."

The frontman revealed that a return to the England squad could be on the cards if he continues to play regularly for the Merseyside club.

"It would be nice to be involved with England and to get a run-out in the friendly," he added. "I am working hard in training every day to get my fitness up. I can only say I am working my hardest to get back the way I was.

"I just need to keep getting my name on the starting sheet every week and see what happens from there.

"It is disappointing when you are sitting on the bench but it only makes you work harder the next day in training to get your place back."

The Reds take on Swansea City at Anfield on Saturday.
