Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard: 'I wish Liverpool has signed Dele Alli'

Steven Gerrard says that he wished Liverpool had signed Dele Alli instead of Tottenham Hotspur.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has claimed that he wished the Reds had poached Dele Alli before Tottenham Hotspur got their hands on him.

The 19-year-old agreed to move to White Hart Lane from MK Dons in January, but did not join up with the Premier League club until the summer.

This season, the teenager has made 12 appearances, scored two goals and recently opened his account for England.

Gerrard, who ended his 17-year career at Anfield at the end of last season, believes that Liverpool should have signed the youngster as his replacement.

"He looks ahead of me as far as England games and appearances are concerned," Gerrard told BT Sport. "He's got more experience because he came through at MK Dons which has helped him progress and make the impact he has done at Tottenham.

"I was actually disappointed Liverpool didn't sign him. I thought he was certainly a player Liverpool might've tried to go for, especially with me coming to the end. He's certainly a player that could play for Liverpool for 15 years, he's got that ability."

Alli spent three years playing for MK Dons.
