David James: 'Liverpool's best signing is James Milner'

David James believes that England midfielder James Milner is the best signing that Liverpool have made so far this summer.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James has told Sports Mole that the club's best piece of business in the transfer market this summer has been the addition of James Milner.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has spent a combined £60m to bring in Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke from Hoffenheim and Aston Villa respectively, while England right-back Nathaniel Clyne has also arrived at Anfield following an impressive season on the South Coast with Southampton.

However, James has insisted that Milner, who joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Manchester City, will prove himself to be the shrewdest of Rodgers's acquisitions, having highlighted the 29-year-old midfielder's dedication and creativity as his outstanding traits.

"I love everything about James Milner. His worth ethic as a professional footballer is second to none. We got beat by Germany at the World Cup [in 2010]. Everyone has gone straight to the bar except James Milner, who was doing a warm down and a recovery session! We had some time off, but that's James Milner," said the ex-Reds keeper, who was speaking at a BT Sport media event to launch the broadcaster's football coverage for the coming season.

"He's gifted with both feet and he just impresses me. He will give something extra to Liverpool, especially with the quality of his crossing and that alone has made him their best signing.

"They've got Danny Ings, Divock Origi, Daniel Sturridge and Benteke, all of whom are different types of striker. They make for different puzzles, but all of them could benefit from Milner's vision. He's a bit like Steven Gerrard in that sense."

Milner made the switch to Merseyside following a five-year stint with Man City, whom he helped to win the Premier League title on two occasions.
