Jordan Henderson ready for Liverpool captaincy

Jordan Henderson insists that he would be ready to assume the Liverpool captaincy should he be chosen to take over from Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has said that he wants to take on extra responsibility following the exit of captain Steven Gerrard.

The 35-year-old has left Anfield to join Los Angeles Galaxy, with Henderson being mooted as one of the contenders to take up the armband after serving as deputy last season.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has not named his new captain yet, but Henderson says that he is ready to take up the role.

"I've always wanted to take more responsibility, especially at the stage of my career I'm at," the England international told Goal.com.

"I feel I'm getting a bit older now, a bit more mature and of course I want to take more responsibility for the team but at the same time, I think it's up to all of us as a team to take more responsibility on the pitch and make sure we put in good performances.

"When I've been vice-captain I've just tried to do my best for the team as I always have and to learn as much as I can from Stevie, like I have from when I first came to the club. But we've got a lot of captains and a lot of leaders in the dressing room so I'm sure whoever he [Rodgers] picks, the lads will be right behind him."

Henderson has made 176 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Sunderland in 2011.
