Emmanuel Petit: 'Jurgen Klopp betrayed Liverpool's DNA'

Emmanuel Petit questions Jurgen Klopp's decision to make 'defensive changes' when Liverpool were protecting a lead against Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has accused Jurgen Klopp of 'getting it wrong' by betraying Liverpool's DNA with his use of substitutes in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds were a goal up when Klopp introduced Joel Matip for James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum for Jordan Henderson.

In a crazy conclusion to the contest, Spurs would equalise before falling behind for a second time, only for Harry Kane to convert from the penalty spot in the fifth minute of added time to see the points shared.

Petit has questioned the approach taken by Klopp, comparing it to the tactics deployed by Unai Emery in Paris Saint-Germain's infamous 6-1 loss to Barcelona last season.

"It was an exceptional end of the match but I found that Klopp got in wrong, especially in the last 20 minutes by replacing attackers players with defensive players," he told SFR. "He had the game in his hand, even if Tottenham had made a comeback in the second half, the match was under control in the first half.

"It reminds me of Emery in the second match against Barcelona, where at 3-1 he made defensive changes. I think it sends bad messages to your players when it is like that, especially in the English culture where people are more likely to go on the attack than protect a result.

"It is not in Liverpool's DNA to sit on a result. I found it was an error from Klopp but I am a big fan of his character."

Following the draw with Spurs, Liverpool are now unbeaten in their past 15 league games at Anfield.
